Dr. Berner's keynote, "Why Educational Philosophy Matters: Distinctively Christian Schools in the Public Square" will give participants the opportunity to think through what it means to present a congruent Christian education, an education that allows God's children to become who He created them to be, with a coherence between their minds, hearts, and hands. While all members of schools’ faculty will benefit from the Fall Symposium, we strongly encourage participating schools to register the Head of School along with the Dean of Students and Academic Dean, as well as representatives from the Board of Trustees/Directors, as the Symposium will be centered on issues central to the enhancing the school's program to allow for true Christian integration and service. Roundtable Discussion: 21st Century Technology in the
Christian Liberal Arts School
Monday, April 16th
The Dunham School
Baton Rouge, LA
Combined with observation of teachers at TDS, this discussion sought to help school leaders gain practical and philosophical grounding in what is seemingly an ideologically opposed philosophy of learning. The Dunham School is 1 of 56 schools nationally to be named an Apple Distinguished School. All Dunham students have MacBooks, but teachers utilize Harkness teaching, and other traditional methods. This unique model of integration serves as a catalyst for discussion of the role of teacher in the discipleship model of a Christian school while providing the skills necessary for our students to flourish in the world today.
Below you will find readings are useful for developing a greater understanding of this topic. You will also find Tim Wiens' opening remarks from this event. The first reading, from The Chronicle of Higher Education argues that the Liberal Arts is the most logical place to engage with technology; if the goal of liberal arts is for students to fully engage with the world, technology can allow them to do this more effectively than ever. The second reading, a chapter from Wisdom and Eloquence, by Evans and Littlejohn, is a helpful context as we consider the goals of teaching and learning in the liberal arts tradition. Lastly, the third reading from 21stcenturyschools.com outlines 21st Century learning theory. CESA is an organization steeped deep in the liberal arts; this third reading is supplied to provide context and, in some cases contrast, to the spectrum of ideas currently being implemented in schools across the country.
